Quick Thought: Love to Give

One of the hardest parts of last year was the displacement of love in my heart. I had been in a serious relationship for so long, and had been planning on that relationship progressing into this year and beyond. However, that didn’t end up working out. While I’ve worked through that now and see it as a part of God’s plan that will lead me to better seasons of life, I want to address that strange feeling. I still had so much love to give in me, but where was it supposed to go?

I knew the logical answer was to put that love into myself and really take the time to focus on me. But that just didn’t feel right; I had love to give, not love to keep. And in the aftermath of the split, I really wasn’t in the mood to shower myself in praise and nice things. So I just let the love sit there, displaced and not quite belonging anywhere.

But that was wrong. I had so many people (and furry friends) to give that love to, as well as my Savior, Jesus Christ. Once I redirected that love into Christ as well as pouring more into my family friends, and beloved pets, I felt like it was easier to breathe. And through loving others, I learned to love myself again. I got to rediscover myself in a way that I never thought I would, and it all began with loving others and finding a deeper relationship with God. When you’re closer to God, you love others better, and when you love others better, you naturally love yourself more. You become a person you’re proud to be.

After a tough situation, it can be hard to give the love in your heart to yourself. So start with giving it to those around you who have stuck by your no matter what. And don’t forget to reach out to God and show plenty of it to Him, too. Everything that starts with God ends with living your best life possible. Root your life in Him, and He will lead you to a love for others and yourself that you never thought you had in you.

“Be on guard. Stand firm in the faith. Be courageous. Be strong. And do everything with love.” -1 Corinthians 16:13-14

What better depiction of love than creme brûlée? (Kidding!)
